There are lots of fun and free activities you can do in Galway at the weekends which you might not have considered yet. If you’re looking for inspiration, we’re sharing some of our favourites from live music to outdoor adventures and galleries you can add to your weekend plans.
Swim in the Ocean
We are very lucky to have the gorgeous wild atlantic way on our doorsteps here in Galway and it is home to some of the most fantastic beaches. From Dogs Bay to Blackrock Diving tower, there are so many spots to pop in for a refreshing dip. The sea swimming community is helpful and fun too so you might even make some new friends!

Picnic in Coole Park
There is nothing more relaxing than a Sunday stroll around Coole Park and at this time of the year it’s a great space for picnics. If you’re saving money, why not rustle up some sandwiches, snacks and drinks at home and head to the grounds for a perfect picnic?

Forest Walks in Nature
From Barna to Kinvara, there are numerous well-maintained and accessible walkways to reconnect you to nature. We are fond of the walks around Clarinbridge in particular as it has a gorgeous forest with streams and wide open spaces.

Visit a Gallery or Museum
Galway City Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00. Galleries close at 16:45 and admission is free. It’s right in the centre of our city but perhaps you haven’t had a look around it yet, definitely one to add to your weekend plans and while you’re at it why not take a little walking tour of the monuments and stroll the canal for a different view of the city.

Open Mic in Roisin Dubh
Every Sunday night upstairs in the Roisin Dubh at 9.30pm you will see local musicians and those passing through the city performing in an intimate but lively and supportive environment. Entry is free, sign-up is at 9pm and if you’re interested in staying out a little later John Conneely Inc. plays an incredible show downstairs from 12 midnight into the early hours for just €6.
