People, Places and Things
with Jeff Warde
Jeff Warde is the co-owner of Tree Bark Store and Craobh, both located in Moycullen village. Jeff and his wife Yvonne focus on supporting and stocking small Irish businesses. In Tree Bark Store they serve specialty coffee along with a huge range of gifts, artwork and more from Irish makers, and two doors down in their new space Craobh, they offer a constantly updated seasonal food menu with ingredients from local farms, bakers and others. We chatted with Jeff about his inspirations, and love of living with his family in Galway.
Describe yourself in three words:
Curious. Caffeinated. Chatty.
What is something our readers might not know about you?
I can’t say no to a good side project. Free time is a scarcity but I’m always filling it with things like our coffee show, The Coffee Coarse that we record with other shops/roasters locally, podcasting and organising events. We have a really big coffee event happening in Galway this October that we’ll be announcing soon!
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Getting to support so many other small businesses doing their own thing for the love of it. Last Christmas we had over 125 Irish businesses on our shelves and it was great to see so many people eager to buy their gifts for friends and family from our shelves.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
I don’t know about inspiration but if I could recommend one person that I think everyone could benefit from reading his work it’s Michael Pollan. He writes all about our relationship with food and the food system and it’ll really open your eyes to how we all need to make a change! Start with In Defence of Food and you’ll be hooked!
Tell us something you love about Galway:
Community. Honestly it seems no matter what it is you do you’ll find your tribe. We’re always talking to, getting help from and giving help to other shops in Galway. It’s not a competition when you’re all trying to be better and elevate the experience for people with the hope of making change happen.
