Labelled as ‘The Best Dance Party in Town’, The Anam Tour arrives in Galway on Wednesday 20th September in The Town Hall Theatre

Anam (meaning soul) is an exhilarating, upbeat fusion of hard shoe step dancing styles from US, Canada and Ireland woven cleverly together with personality, humour and superb Irish traditional music.

Co-commissioned by Dublin Dance Festival and The National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Anam debuted at the 2016 Dublin Dance Festival and received enthusiastic reviews and audience reaction. The production features dancers Matthew Olwell (Appalachian Flat Foot), Jonathan Kelliher (North Kerry “Munnix”), Nathan Pilatzke (Ottawa Valley, Canada) and John Fitzgerald (Modern Irish). Anamincorporates a personal insight into each of the dancers and the infectious party atmosphere is accompanied by live music and song by acclaimed Irish musician and composer Feargal Ó Murchú, Mikie Smyth (pipes and tin whistle) and Joseph McNulty (bodhrán and guitar).

Authentic and raw, this percussive dance piece explores the similarities and differences between the dancers, each with their own distinct hard shoe style.  Anam attests to the tradition of ‘passing on’; celebrating the dance’s essential spirit, yet injecting it with fresh energy to create something new.Anam-2

Jonathan Kelliher, Co-Director of Anam and Artistic Director of the National Folk Theatre of Ireland comments, “It is a great honour for me to once again perform on stage with this great cast.  We had such great fun creating this piece and I am delighted to now be able to share this experience with people across the country. The personalities and background of each of us is what makes this a special production.  Each performer brings with him, a long history of who he is and what made him the dancer, singer or musician he is today.  Following such a positive reaction to our performance at the Dublin dance festival, we are all excited to be back performing together again showcasing the expertise, history and craic of these similar yet different dance forms in a toe-tapping evening of entertainment to audiences across Ireland.”

Anam was co-directed by Jonathan Kelliher and Sue-Ellen Chester MacCarthy.  This tour is funded by the Arts Council. Don’t miss this infectiously spirited dance party!

The tour will include eight venues – An Grianán Letterkenny (13th), Backstage Theatre Longford (14th), Lime Tree Theatre Limerick (15th), Pavilion Theatre Dun Laoghaire (16th), Town Hall Theatre Galway (20th), Glór Ennis (21st), Dunamaise Arts Centre Port Laoise (22nd), culminating in its final performance in the National Folk Theatre’s home in Siamsa Tíre, Tralee (23rd).
